Howdy!
How do we value art? This question fascinates me. The fine art world sits at the intersection of insane wealth and humanity’s love affair with the magic of creating.
From a human perspective, the eye-watering price of fine art reflects that maybe we all believe that art is almost invaluable – priceless, even? From a purely financial perspective, I have a hard time intellectually grasping this concept.
If I’m feeling cynical, I can reduce fine art to a great money laundering vehicle, an asset whose value can be manipulated, or a way to hide some of your wealth. When I’m in awe of what humanity is capable of, I view the creative act as magic. A seductive dance between the artist and the mistress inspires them to create; she quietly drops ideas into their consciousness.
On this week’s episode of the Weird Finance podcast, I spoke to Jay Handy. Jay is both a fine artist and a financial advisor. He’s co-founder of financial advisory firm, SignalPoint Asset Management, and over the last five years, he’s been building his reputation as a serious fine artist.
