I created this newsletter as a way to keep people in Baltimore informed on ways we all can support our favorite local restaurants and food & beverage businesses.

No ads, no memberships, just info.

All I ask is this: forward it onto a few of your friends who love good food.

new coffee shop + roastery now open in Remington
I had such a nice visit at Cafe Los Suenos, which is a new coffee shop in Remington (around the corner from my school!) last week. What a treat and welcome addition to the neighborhood. Owner (and roaster) Carlos Payes and his wife Elizabeth have put their EVERYTHING into this wonderful little shop. The nicest people! A native of El Salvador and a former coffee farm worker, Carlos came to the US years ago with the hope of eventually having his own coffee business. He has been roasting for several years now and has a thriving farmers market business in DC selling his beans. Then, the Remington project came about and we are all the luckier!

For now, they are open limited hours. Check their social media for updates.

Half Smoke opened in DC's Shaw neighborhood in 2016. It's a fast-casual place that focuses on creative combinations of sausages + toppings on various bases like a bun or flatbread, in a rice bowl or in a salad. The Original Half Smoke is a sausage with chili, bacon, onion crisps, slaw and beer cheese. (Hi, gimme.) They also offer a plant-based option which is served with avocado, salsa and chimichurri. According to the menu, they also offer salads (I love a wedge), sides like loaded tots and Parmesan cauliflower bites and also house cocktails and desserts, including Taharka Brothers ice cream. They are in the Can Co. in the former Alma Cocina Latina space, which is now open uptown at the corner of Charles and Lanvale in Station North.
a new venture in Old Goucher

A new bar is coming to Old Goucher (lots going on there over the last few years!) and it's being opened by four partners, three of whom are involved in the food/bev scene here (see pic: Martha Lucius, Chelsea Gregoire and Marisa Dobson. The fourth partner is New York-based chef Taylor “Tay” Threadgill. For more about the project, check out Jane Marion's article for Baltimore Magazine. They are hoping for a late summer opening. Excited for this!
food with a purpose
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, activist JC Faulk and a devoted team of volunteers built Bmore Community Food (BCF) into one of the largest distributors of rescued food in Baltimore. With many existing food deserts, Baltimore residents were hit especially hard by the pandemic. Bmore Community Food sources food creatively and now collects fresh, healthy food from the local Amazon warehouse, Gotham GreensFirst Fruit FarmsMotzi BreadMcCormick and others, much of which would otherwise be tossed out.

They are now working toward securing a food truck and are a little over halfway to their goal. Please see their GoFundMe to learn more.
supporting The GreenMount School
I am so thankful for my job! After four years of consulting, l found my way back to my former life in fundraising. I think non-profit is where I belong, and now to be a part of a wonderful community like the one at The GreenMount School, I'm feeling so lucky. Here's where you come in...

We are doing a series of GreenMount School takeout nights every few months. It started with Chipotle and then we expanded to locally owned restaurants. I was hesitant to ask restaurant owners to consider giving proceeds back to us in the middle of a global pandemic, but everyone we asked said yes and it turns out it's pretty much a win-win. The restaurant is busier on a weeknight, our community members can come "together" and we make some money! So far, we've had fundraisers with Golden West Cafe, Taharka Brothers and Molina Pizza. Next up: The Local Fry and MOD Pizza at the Rotunda on TUESDAY 4/13. Both restaurants will donate 20% to The GreenMount School. Please visit our Facebook event page for more details. We will add ordering links to the FB event this week that will help to make sure your donation gets to us. THANK YOU.

I am sending this week's newsletter on Saturday for two reasons: 1) to give everyone a heads up about the JFX Market tomorrow. And 2) to give myself a day off tomorrow!

So many places are opening outdoor seating, so be sure to follow your favorites on social media. I am in the process of having my website refreshed and organized, so that will soon be a place where you can find more food/bev news and info. (But Instagram is really where I focus most of my time.)
