Catherine honored at the Met 🙌

Beth, Cat, Flavia & Nic Repping Aubin @ The Met's annual evening honoring women

I want the kind of freedom that doesn’t come from permission or compliance, but from our refusalto be molded by others who gaslight our most foundational intuition. I want the kind of freedomthat allows us to build worlds that aren’t shaped by them—that we know exist, that we hunger for, that we devote ourselves to. That’s the kind of freedom we deserve. The kind that lets us dream.

- Catherine Gun at The Met's annual evening honoring women

Since Trump was sworn into office, it’s been a delicate balancing act - protecting my mental well-being while also staying engaged, present, and aware of what’s happening in real time. Some days, that means stepping back. Other days, it means leaning in. Tuesday was one of those days, but in a way I didn’t expect.

After work, Beth, Nic, and I headed to the Met, where Catherine Gund, Lucy Yu, and Maria Torres-Springer were being honored at The Met’s 18th Annual Evening Celebrating Women. The museum was unusually quiet, its hallways nearly empty as we made our way toward the central pavilion, where a quartet played beneath the soaring glass ceiling.

The event wasn’t just a recognition - it felt like a gathering of community, of people who believe in inclusion, diversity, and connection. I carried that feeling home with me, holding it close as I sat down, a few hours later, to watch Trump’s speech to Congress.

It felt like watching two separate worlds unfold side by side. With each remark he made, Catherine’s words echoed in my mind as a gentle reminder that kindness, care, and community are not only enduring but also powerful forms of resistance.

📰 Read about PAINT in  📰

“...the point of making work for and with women who have been jailed is to say, by example, that if you can speak—itself an act of defiance—you can say your name.” - Hilton Als
“...a story that feels like a thriller as well as a metaphor for the way societies treat incarcerated people.” – Alissa Wilkinson
“...captivating, poignant and empowering”- Avi Offer
“Gund saw in this story a clear metaphor: a beautiful painting went into Rikers and came out destroyed. The same goes for the countless individuals who end up on Rikers, 90% of whom are being held pre-trial.” – Abigail Glasgow

“A wild tale of the painting's whitewashed journey and the two artists who challenge the same powerful, oppressive, and persistent institutions... Celebrates the longstanding interconnection of art and activism, even as it too contributes to that revolutionary tide of ideas.” – Jennie Kermode

Keep Your Laws Off My Body

a film by Catherine (Saalfield) Gund & Zoe Leonard (1990)

Intimate scenes of gentle sexuality and domesticity set to the mechanical cadence of a projector (evoking a feeling somewhere between the repetitive labour of a sewing machine and violence of a machine gun) are juxtaposed with images of police and sirens to highlight the alarming intrusion of America’s laws on queer people and women’s bodies in healthcare, sexual expression, and desire.
