Fall soccer league

Registration starts in May. Thanks to donations from many families and sponsors, especially the Capital Group and the LA84 foundation, the price will be the same as last year.

There may be a waiting list, and children of parents who volunteer will have priority. The 16U and 19U programs will probably fill up in the first week of May.

AYSO means volunteering. If there are 9 players on a team, and each team needs two coaches, two referees, and a manager, then that means you are  probably doing one of those jobs. Fortunately, AYSO provides the best training and mentoring in youth soccer. You’ll apply to volunteer, and authorize a background check when you register your child. Coach and referee classes will be in July-August.

Players are assigned teams on a first-come, first served basis, and the number of teams will depend on how many parents volunteer to coach and referee. If you are the head coach for more than one team, the games will be scheduled as conveniently as possible.

You may register in any AYSO region. Region 13 practices and plays on fields in Pasadena and La Cañada.

Soccer values

AYSO is more than a soccer league -- it's a community development organization that happens to play soccer.  You’re joining a community of families who are simply putting on a fun soccer program for kids. It’s an opportunity to observe how hard work and a positive attitude lead to results. Over weeks, over months, and over years, you’ll notice changes in the children and in yourself. The parents who have the most fun are the parents who admire the growth of all the kids, not just their own, on all the teams. And there’s a lot to admire!

On any given Saturday in the fall, about 5% of the population of Pasadena, Altadena, and La Canada are either playing or watching AYSO soccer. So take advantage of each soccer game to cheer for your child's team, and also for the kids and parents of the other team, who you'll probably get to play with again and again for many more years.

Message from the commissioner

Dear Soccer Families,

In 10U and older divisions, some parents are surprised that Region 13 no longer honors requests for specific players to be on the same team. Why is that? Why can't my child play with her friend from school?

One of AYSO's six core philosophies is that of balanced teams - every year we try to make teams of equal strength so that every team has an equal chance of winning against any other team in the division. At least, on paper this is true, as actually making balanced teams is really difficult and sometimes one team in a division ends up being more successful than others.

Balanced teams is the opposite philosophically of club soccer - where teams play together for years. Every year in AYSO, players are mixed together with others in the same division to make new teams. Sometimes players may know someone on their team, and sometimes not, at least at the beginning of the season. By the end of the season though, players have will have made new friends, some of whom are from other schools or other parts of the City. And it's for this reason that the balanced teams philosophy is important for building a community.

Here at AYSO, we use the word "community" a lot. In a sense, we are all part of "One Team." All of us here in AYSO - players, parents, referees, coaches, administrators, etc. - are all part of One Team whose goal is, simply, to get kids to play soccer.

Soon, you'll be invited to register your kids for the fall season. I hope that you'll have your kids join our Region 13 team. And more so, I hope that you or your family will join our team as a volunteer - playing in AYSO means volunteering: volunteers make soccer possible for all of our kids. Kids always need coaches and referees, and AYSO offers many other ways to contribute.

Lastly, making new friends are what team sports are all about, and it's through playing these sports that players can develop a sense of teamwork and working together towards a common goal. I look forward making a lot of new friends during this year's fall soccer league, and I hope you do, too.

See you on the field!

Terry Takahashi
