ISSUE #84
Free Issue

Welcome back!
We got some fresh news for you this month. First off, we’ve teamed up with Reveal Studio and we’re making good progress with our website, which we’ll launch very soon. In the meantime, we introduced a customer portal for Fresh Fonts members to easily manage their subscription. Last but not least, my friend Badr Abou started publishing a newsletter with curated resources on design, productivity and self-growth that might come in handy.

Enjoy! Noemi

Font Family of the Month

MEMBERS RECEIVE A NEW FONT FAMILY EVERY MONTH TO USE IN THEIR PERSONAL AND COMMERCIAL PROJECTS. AND THEY CAN USE IT FOREVER.

At Gambit by Andy Lethbridge

FREE FOR MEMBERS

At Gambit is the first serif release of new type foundry Arillatype.Studio. Despite being new, the foundry is led by experienced type designer Pedro Arilla, who previously worked as a Creative Director for Fontsmith. We picked At Gambit as our typeface of the month because we like how it feels “sharp and confident whilst remaining graceful and delicate.” At Gambit comes in five weights, with matching italics, a suite of chess and typographic symbols, and several sets of numerals. There is also a Stencil sister family completing the collection.

Become a member this month and get a perpetual license that includes:

  • The complete At Gambit family (10 font styles + variable font)
  • Use in personal and commercial projects
  • Unlimited desktop use
  • Unlimited web use
  • Unlimited use in apps and broadcasts
  • Everything else included in Arillatype’s all-inclusive license

Fresh Releases

Selecta by Maximage

From CHF 120

Published by little-known Swiss collective Maxitype, Selecta is perfect for web design and text animations. This is because the typeface has a fixed width across all styles — meaning that once text is typeset, any change in its weight or angle won’t impact line length, therefore not causing text to reflow. In addition, Selecta comes with 200+ symbols, web icons, buttons and pictograms, providing a complete ecosystem useful for both web design and signage.

Rapidissima by Michelangelo Nigra

From €72

Three years after graduating from TypeMedia, designer Michelangelo Nigra completed his thesis project — a new font collection published at Typotheque. The collection consists of two families: Rapida, a serif typeface most suited to small sizes and longer form reading, and Rapidissima, its high-energy display counterpart. Although both families would be great font picks, I find Rapidissima more impressive, which is available exclusively as Italic, “presenting an extreme visual rendering of the idea of speed.”

NaN Tresor by Christoph Koeberlin

From €60

To quote Jan Kermes on this one, Tresor is “putting the grotesque back in grotesk – or a grotesk for those who are tired of grotesks.” Coming with a monstruous set of alternates, Tresor is available in three optical sizes: S, which is intended for use at small sizes, M, suitable for use at most scales, and L, which is tailored for titles with panache. There is also Tresor Swash, an alternative version of Tresor L with ornamental caps and swashes, which is available exclusively when licensing the complete family.

Rizoma by Rui Abreu

From €45

Rizoma is Rui Abreu’s take on classic Roman inscription letters, aiming to “capture the elegance and confidence of the monumental alphabet of ancient Rome.” Abreu brings a clean and elegant sensibility to the originally brush-created and chiseled-in letterforms. As he puts it: “The result is a utilitarian and slightly constructivist type family of text and titling fonts, with six weights, and energetic cursive italics.”

Match by Hannes von Döhren

From €35

Berlin-based HvD Fonts released Match. Five years in the making, the family covers a broad scope of tonalities — from the elegant Thin and Light styles, to the strong and confident Ultra and Black styles. Note that its extreme weights (Thin, ExtraLight, Black, and Ultra) have a tighter spacing than the weights in between, as they are intended for use at large sizes. Match comes with two sets of punctuation (round or square) and support for Latin, Greek and Cyrillic.

Experimental Typeface

Void by Malte Bentzen

From CHF 150

Void is an innovative display typeface designed by Malte Bentzen. Its high-contrast letterforms are the outcome of a research project that looked into abstract typographic shapes that are not defined by standard writing tools. The typeface is available in three static weights (Thin, Regular and Bold) plus as a variable format. I love this one and I think it would be an amazing pick for any project related to electronic music.
