I've been hard at work editing When Darkness Blinds. I was gone for a week, but I still got nearly 70 hours of work done in May. Editing continues to be a time-consuming process, but though I'm not as far into the edits as I'd hoped, progress is being steadily made!
To help me with my motivation, I drew a tracker to map my editing progress. This is what it looks like so far!

Cover art has ground to a bit of a halt as I work through some unexpected complications with Miblart. When Miblart sent me their last revised sketch (which I shared in my previous newsletter) they told me they weren't happy with the city section, and suggested some alternate options for the scene inside the silhouette.
I considered their ideas and spent some time in my art program trying to come up with a solution to their concerns. I ended up with the following, suggesting that the bridge (from an earlier sketch) could serve as a focal point, or it could be removed and the other buildings moved down to fill the space. I also adjusted the lighting and shadows in order to add more contrast to the piece.

|
Quite unexpectedly, they replied saying this would require the artist to 'redo a significant portion of the sketch from scratch' and might come at an additional cost.
I was confused by this, as they were the ones who had suggested changing the interior scene, not to mention, my version mostly reused aspects of the artist's own sketches. I replied saying this, and told them we could lose the bridge to simplify things for the artist, and made a few other suggestions that would hopefully reduce her work load. They replied a few days later saying these changes would involve a 'comprehensive overhaul', requiring the project to be 'redrawn from the beginning', and that an additional fee would be charged if I wanted to proceed.
Again, I was caught off-guard, in part because they were the ones who had suggested making a change (and the revision I proposed was not a comprehensive overhaul by any stretch), and in part because their site promises unlimited revisions in the sketch phase with "no hidden fees".
I emailed again outlining all of this, and provided a second visual (posted below) to show that the alterations I made to the artist's work were essentially just moving and resizing the buildings she had already designed, and shouldn't involve starting anything from scratch.

The lady who serves as an intermediary between me and the artist replied to say that, while they do offer unlimited revisions, redraws of the artist's work can incur additional fees, and that she would check with the artist about my suggestions and follow up shortly. That was over a week ago, and I still have not heard if they will be charging me extra to make the requested adjustments to the sketch.
Needless to say, the process has been rather frustrating, and I will be relieved when the cover is finally done. Hopefully, we will be out of the sketch phase soon!

My goals this month are the same as last month: editing, editing, editing! My pace has been slower than I'd like, but I'm hoping to get as close to the halfway mark as I can by the end of the month. Of course, June is a busy time at school, so we'll see how things go!

When Shadows Fall's Second Birthday! 🥳
|
It's hard to believe, but When Shadows Fall is celebrating its second birthday today! I've learned a great deal during these past two years, and I'm excited to see how my journey as an author will progress once When Darkness Blinds is also released!
I decided not to do any special sales or fancy extras this year, as I'd rather focus on finishing book two with as little delay as possible. But, as a fun bonus for my subscribers, here is some When Shadows Fall trivia!
WSF was originally written in third person (she/her) instead of first person (I/me). I generally prefer writing in third person, but I found Ara felt too difficult to empathize with in the early drafts, and part of the problem was the distance third person creates between the character and the reader. I made the switch to first person, and found this made it easier to relate to Ara's anxieties and struggles.
The reason Kav is half-Larik, half-Turian is because of an accidental goof I made when naming her. I was so used to naming characters following the typical Larik naming convention (consonant, short vowel, consonant) that I defaulted to that pattern, completely forgetting that she was a Turian! By the time I realized, I'd been calling her Kav for too long to change it. I decided the simplest solution was to make her half-Larik, thus explaining her non-Turian name.
I mentioned this once before, but there is a continuity error in WSF that I totally missed! Ara veers north when she leaves the night road, but magically transports to the south side of the road later on. Originally, Ara's journey did take place on the north side, but I ended up changing my mind about which side of the road the many locations she visits should be on. I made the necessary changes in the story, but missed the scene where she first leaves the road. Oops!
In an earlier version of the book, I had Ara sipping her tea from a spoon, until someone pointed this out as odd. The reason I wrote Ara using a spoon? Because I always drink hot beverages with a spoon until they've cooled, and I forgot that this wasn't normal for most people!
In other news, When Shadows Fall has officially reached 55 ratings and 30 reviews on Goodreads, as well as 44 ratings and 31 reviews on Amazon (Canada). If you were one of these reviews/ratings, thank you, thank you, thank you!
I'll leave the link here for anyone who has not yet bought When Shadows Fall and is interested in checking it out! 😊 (Available in eBook and Print!)

I saw this writing meme the other day, and it gave me a good chuckle. It feels especially relevant given how some of my editing sessions have been going!

Reading: After finally finishing Children of Dune, I started on The Priory of the Orange Tree, which has been on my TBR (to be read) for some time! The book is massive, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

If you've already read When Shadows Fall, please don't forget to leave a review/rating on Amazon and Goodreads!! Seriously, these reviews and ratings make a huge difference, and I appreciate every single one I get!

These past two years have flown by in a flash! I am humbled and honoured by every person who chooses to follow me on this journey. Thank you for waiting so patiently for book two, and for continuing to support me.
Writing a book is no easy feat. It can be demoralizing at times, but whenever someone messages me to say they loved the book, or they bought it for a friend, or someone leaves a review or rating, I remember that I'm not just writing for myself any more. I'm writing for every single one of my readers, including all my future readers.
So, if you are one of those readers, you have my heartfelt thanks! Allow me to express my gratitude with these kitty pictures. 😊
