In Case You Missed ItSeptember 8th - 15th was Career Conversations Week on the EA Forum. Users were encouraged to reflect on impact-oriented careers, take career-related actions, and share useful resources. You can find posts related to this topic under the
career conversations 2023 tag on the Forum!
Some of the posts include a
Q&A from 80,000 Hours,
advice from the Probably Good team, and several "
job profiles" (where people
write about their jobs).
By the way, 80,000 Hours just launched an
updated career guide. You can read more about the
full list of changes here and ask for a
free copy of their book here.
Relatedly, September 16th - 24th is AI Pause Debate week on the EA Forum! Check it out under this tag/topic.Celebrating EA NYC
Thanks to all who joined EAGxNYC! The conference last month welcomed ~500 registrants and took place over the course of three days. Arthur and the EAGx team will be releasing a retrospective on the event soon, but, in short, we think it was a big success! This was our first EA conference in NYC, but we hope it is far from being the last!
By the way, EA NYC has reached some major milestones lately. To celebrate, our team wrote up a post outlining some of the cool activity we've seen in the past year or so. We encourage you to
check it out and let us know what you think!
Help Support EA NYC
Call for EA NYC Board MembersEffective Altruism NYC is seeking enthusiastic board members to help provide oversight, guidance and accountability to the organization and its Director!
Please fill in this brief application if you might be interested in joining the Effective Altruism NYC board of directors.
The existing board is hoping to build a mix of skills and perspectives in EA NYC's governance, so please don't hesitate to apply! In other words, if you're not fully familiar with
our team, the NYC community, certain kinds of processes, or any other particular aspect of governing EA NYC, your different perspective might actually help to make the organization stronger, and
we encourage you to apply!
The loose application deadline has been moved to
Sunday, September 24th, though, rolling applications will also be considered.
Express interest in new potential subgroups
Announcing several new potential subgroups! Following EAGx, we noticed a few professional and affinity groups that might have enough interest to form their own
EA NYC subgroups.
After speaking with a few people, we particularly think an LGBTQ+ subgroup might be likely to launch in the next few months, but we encourage you to express interest in any of the groups below that you have a background in and for which you might be likely to attend meetings:
Speaking of which,
EA NYC is still seeking support from a wide variety of volunteers (especially for supporting subgroups). This can be anything from helping with finding venues, to welcoming newcomers, and from facilitating casual meetups, to coordinating and running events!
If you’re interested or know someone who might be, please refer to our
expression of interest form and/or
reach out to Alex! There are a wide range of options, and we’d be happy to help you find the opportunity that works for you! We are especially keen to hear from potential volunteers of backgrounds underrepresented in the EA community.
ConferencesFinal call for EAG Boston applications! EA Global: Boston will take place October 27-29, and will feature community members and experts from all around the world gathered to discuss applied ideas from effective altruism.
We think many people from our community would likely benefit from attending, and we encourage you to check out the
EA Global FAQ page to get a better sense for what the conference will entail (and how it differs from "EAG
x" conferences).
When in doubt, feel free to
apply here by October 13th and/or book a call with
Rocky and/or
Alex to discuss more. Whatever you do,
don't disqualify yourself for no good reason! Please reach out us (ie. me, Alex RK - reach out to me
over email or
on our Slack) before you talk yourself out of going :)
Otherwise, we're also looking forward to EAGxVirtual 2023 coming up soon! The conference will be more accessible to an even broader population (with internet connection being the main travel restriction) and will run from November 17th through 19th. Keep an eye out for admissions opening soon!
