“...this is, indeed, poetry.”
“...feels like both a provocation and a request to consider what flourishing looks like in this chaotic moment — for Black Americans, and for anyone who finds themselves drowning, struggling to breathe.”
“...the movie suggests freedom is something you can experience while also working toward freedom’s creation. Artists know that for sure — ‘Meanwhile’ aims to make it clear to everyone.”

“A gorgeous, quietly energetic, and moving meditation” - Brittany Turner

"The film feels like the creators are putting together a collage of artistic and academic intelligences, layer by layer." - Frantz Jerome

Keeping Time with Christian Marclay’s The Clock 🕰️⏰ |
Christian Marclay’s The Clock (2010) is a 24-hour cinematic collage made from thousands of film and TV clips, each showing the exact time they represent in real life. It’s both a mesmerizing tour through movie history and a reminder that time never stops moving.
This month, The Brooklyn Rail takes on The Clock with a special feature in its Critics Page, bringing together 24 voices from across disciplines—✨including Catherine Gund✨—to reflect on Marclay’s monumental work. One writer for each hour. They call it "chronographic criticism"—a time-based approach to time-based media that mirrors The Clock's layered, cumulative structure. If you’ve never encountered this piece before, or if you spend time thinking about time, cinema and criticism, this is a read for you.
