GPC England Agrees 2025/26 GMS Contract Changes
The GPC England Chair, Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer, has announced that the Government has formally committed to renegotiating a completely new national contract. GPC England has therefore now fully agreed changes to the 2025/26 contract. Katie has recorded a 5 minute video on the latest developments which can be viewed here.

The 2025/26 contract brings new investment of £969m on top of the £433m invested in autumn last year totalling £1.4bn investment since July 2024. This is a first step in the right direction for general practice in England and it follows two months of intense negotiations with the Government and a year of collective organising and action. Read more about the contract at  www.bma.org.uk/gpcontract

Many of the items on the collective action menu are now superseded by the 25/26 contract but practices are recommended to work safely to prioritise safe high-quality patient care. These 2025-26 changes represent an important first step towards the recovery of General Practice services in England and set us on a journey towards making NHS general practice once again the jewel in the NHS crown. If you have any queries about how this will affect your practice please get in touch.

Focus On... Professional Development for GPs and Practice Managers - Dr Zoe Norris
Dr Zoe Norris
One of the things that the LMC has tried to develop in the last 3 years is an improved offer to our GPs and practice managers for their ongoing professional development. 2025 marks the third year we have run our free PM Conference which is a one-day event designed to allow busy practice managers chance to network, share their experiences, and hear from relevant speakers.

As our PM lead, Maddie Clifford-Roper puts the agenda together based on feedback throughout the year, particularly from our Practice Manager Reference Group (PMRG) meetings. These take place at 9:30am on the second Wednesday of every month and are well attended, providing a forum for PMs to get updates directly relevant to their roles and get support from each other and the LMC. View PMRG dates.

The Practice Managers conference this year is being held just over the Humber Bridge, at the Ropewalk in Barton. The agenda is a combination of professional development with talks on CQC preparation, and understanding the GP contract and our place in the ICS. There is also a session on leadership led by coaches Helen and Kay, the amazing team who delivered our PM Connect programme, the most recent PM leadership training the LMC has provided. More details and booking.

Our GPs have continued to feedback that they value the chance to come together face to face for high-quality CPD, and it’s also the third year of the LMC running the GP Update course which will be provided by NB Medical. While the focus of the course is on clinical matters, we hope the opportunity to come together with local colleagues and reconnect in a world where most meetings are now online, gives an opportunity for a more rounded day. Our intention is to continue to offer this at a subsidised rate for the foreseeable future, and it consistently receives positive feedback. This year’s event will be held at Forest Pines hotel, on Saturday 7th June and is open to GPs, GP trainees and any AHP seeing undifferentiated primary care and working in the Humberside area. More details and booking.

We are always keen to get feedback on the development offers the LMC delivers, so if you have other ideas please do share them. We hope to see you at one of our events soon, and please do spread the word!

           Dr Natalie Martin
"A dedicated GP partner, with a passion for partner led general practice at my core. My wide-ranging experience has allowed me to develop a firm understanding of the key issues we face.

I pledge to bring my drive, finance and strategic skills to advocate for fairly contracted general practice. The next few years are critical to the long term survival of the partnership model. My skills and knowledge make me well equipped to contribute to this mission.

Fundamentally, I believe in fair general practice for all. Vote for Natalie Martin for an honest voice with skin in the game."
            Dr Reid Baker
"As a GP and LMC Medical Director, I’ve seen our profession systematically undermined by governments and NHSE, eroding our value and morale. This is not just unfair—it’s unacceptable.

We are at a turning point. General Practice is on the brink, but our strength lies in unity and action. I will fiercely defend our profession, challenge those who undervalue us, and fight for the respect, resources, and conditions we deserve.

Your voice matters. Together, we can reclaim our worth, protect our future, and restore General Practice as the true “jewel in the crown” of the NHS."

The Community Urgent Eyecare Service (CUES) contract (formerly CORRS) provided by Primary Eyecare (North Yorkshire and Humber) Ltd offers urgent assessment, treatment or referral for sudden onset eye problems such as flashes, floaters, vision loss or minor eye injuries.

A list of Hull & ERY providers 2024 is available here. Patients wishing to use this service should call the providers on this list.

Patients suffering with one or more of the following symptoms can be seen for treatment, advice, or onward referral as necessary:
  • Dry eye (lasting longer than 2 weeks after seeing a pharmacist and trying home treatments)
  • Red eye withpain
  • Photophobia
  • Painful eye

  • Diplopia
  • Distorted vision
  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Symptomatic field loss

To use this service free of charge patients must be registered with a Hull or East Riding GP and have one of the above eye problems. Patients do not need to register with the selected Opticians.

Patients can self-refer without a visit to their GP by calling an optician included in the list of Hull & ERY providers - available here. GPs and pharmacists may also refer patients to the scheme.

Routine optical check-ups will often pick up any causes for concern, but painful and irritating symptoms or sudden changes to vision should be investigated as an emergency.

Patients suffering with the above symptoms can contact one of the opticians to be seen as part of CUES; they can contact either a Hull or East Riding optician.
The service is available 5 days per week and an appointment should be offered within 2 working days.  This standard does not apply to patients with suspected glaucoma who require repeat pressures; these patients should be seen in accordance with NICE guidelines i.e. within 14 days.
GP Pressures: Latest Workforce Data
GP practices across the country are experiencing significant and growing strain with declining GP numbers, rising demand, struggles in recruiting and retaining staff, with knock-on effects for patients. The latest workforce data shows that there is still the equivalent of 1,129 fewer fully qualified full-time GPs than in September 2015. During this time, there has been a rise in the number of patients, with January 2025 seeing yet another record-breaking number. GPs are now responsible for about 17% more patients than in 2015, demonstrating significant workload pressures. Read the BMA analysis.
