The Road to the Rose City Cup
The Rose City Cup is Region 13’s single-elimination tournament held at the end of our fall core season. All of 10U-14U teams with sufficient referee points* are invited to participate. This year, the tournament will be held on Saturday, December 6, Sunday, December 7, and Saturday, December 13.
Here’s what to expect:
The Rose City Cup is always full of thrilling matches where teams come together in ways that mark the perfect end to a great season of soccer. *If your team needs to make up referee points and would like help to figure out how to do that, please reach out to harry@ayso13.org.

How Are All-Star Players Chosen?
Selection for All-Star teams is a collaborative effort with all coaches providing input. Players are chosen based on a combination of many factors, in addition to tryouts: performance during the fall season, team needs, age, roster limits, commitment to extra practices and games, and family volunteerism. Just as important are sportsmanship and teamwork—today’s opponents could be tomorrow’s teammates!
Unfortunately, not every deserving player can be placed on a team, and decisions are never easy. Coaches will do their best to evaluate each player fairly, and no matter what, we hope that every player will continue to stay active and enthusiastic about playing soccer.

For 8U Players Moving Up: Grad Series
Grad Series is a thrilling 8-week program designed for players moving up from 8U to 10U (born in 2015 or just finished a season in 8U). Players experience real 10U soccer with 7v7 games on a 10U-sized field with goals, goalkeepers, and all the official Laws of the Game, including offside.
All sessions will take place on Sundays in January through March, with a 45-minute practice followed by a 50-minute game, all in one fun, fast-paced session! Grad Series is one of our most popular programs. It’s a fun, supportive, and confidence-building way to prepare for the jump to 10U soccer. Spots fill quickly, and registration is first-come, first-served.,
Priority is given to coaches and referees—the best way to make sure your player participates is by volunteering.

The Thanksgiving Tournament in ON!
Our tournament is back and being held on the three days immediately after Thanksgiving:
Friday. November 28, Saturday, November 29. Sunday, November 30
The tournament is open to all interested teams in the 10U, 12U, and 14U divisions. Every team is guaranteed three games with additional games for playoffs.
Volunteer of the Week
Oren has been playing AYSO soccer since the age of 7, including fall, spring, and a year of All-Stars. Now part of the Boys 14U division, Oren shines both as a fearless goalkeeper and a dynamic field player, scoring a goal and saving many in his last game. But his love for soccer doesn’t stop there—he’s also stepped up as a youth PRO Referee for 10U matches!
This is his first season volunteering as a PRO Referee, and he’s already taken on roles as both Assistant Referee and Center Referee. The toughest part? Deciding when to make a call! However, so far, the experience has been great, and he has earned respect from players, coaches, and spectators.
Oren loves refereeing and plans to keep volunteering in future seasons. He feels good helping contribute to the AYSO program and would encourage others to volunteer as well. Way to go Oren!

Last Sunday, Angel City Football Club and the Women’s Coaching Alliance hosted a spirited training session for AYSO 8U players at Octavia Butler Middle School in Pasadena. Thank you to all the coaches who led this highly engaging and super fun day, and to all the kids who came out to play!
Hello Region 13 Family,
This past weekend, I served as the Referee for a Boys 14U game at Blair Lower and as an Assistant Referee for a Girls 10U game at Blair Upper. As you can imagine, these were completely different experiences. Some aspects were the same: the coaches were great, and the players were engaged and having fun learning to play soccer. We didn’t always agree on my calls, but we were respectful of each other and the game, and in the end, the kids had a great experience. Which is, of course, the entire reason that we are doing this.
For the Girls 10U game, however, some parents also decided it would be useful to loudly point out every mistake that I made. We referees never claim to be perfect. Once, I told a very advanced referee that I thought I had made a mistake at the previous game. His response was, “Only one?” All of us make mistakes all the time. What matters is how we move on from them and how we treat each other when mistakes are made.
I would encourage everyone to think about this the next time they are at an AYSO soccer game. Our volunteers are working so hard to make our program go. And the kids are watching us all the time. So, let’s set the best example that we possibly can.
