DOVECOTE REOPENS IN RESERVOIR HILL
|
Finally, Dovecote Cafe, the cafe and community hub in Reservoir Hill, reopened this weekend. After the owners were stranded in South Africa due to COVID travel issues, the cafe went on hiatus and now they are finally open again. I'm so happy for the owners, their staff and the neighborhood ⏤ it's such a nice place!

BIRROTECA IS OPEN AND IT'S AS FANTASTIC AS EVER
|
My birthday was last week and I was lucky enough to have two wonderful dinners out with friends! One at Petit Louis and one at Birroteca.
Birroteca was closed throughout most of the pandemic and I worried that they would not reopen, especially following the death of Robbin Haas who was so instrumental in making it a success. I live next door to Birroteca, so I was watching, watching, watching. And they finally reopened in February. Once things seemed safer to me, I knew I would get there. It's always been a favorite.
Many favorites are still on the menu: Brussels sprouts, grilled calamari, pastas, pizzas and more. We ordered a bunch of things to share, some classic cocktails and it was so much fun! Our server was fantastic, too. I can't wait to go back.

Whitehall Market is now open seven days a week. For me (who lives upstairs) this is very exciting news. Not all vendors are open the same hours but I do know that Firefly, Gundalow and Wight Tea will be open seven days at first...hopefully others will follow. More HERE.If you haven't eaten at Heritage Kitchen yet, you really need to. Chef Rey Eugenio is immensely talented ⏤ one of the top chefs in Baltimore. His Filipino-inspired food is very satisfying! Everything he makes has incredible depth of flavor, it is stunning. Highly recommend the lumpia (similar to spring rolls), chicken adobo, soups and more. I can't wait to try the grilled romaine heart salad, a newer item on the ever-changing menu. Plus, Rey is a really kind person. That matters to me, I love to support nice people! When you go, you will see a beautiful bar and seating area. During COVID, the bar has not been available for seating (or drinking...) but just this past week, the bar was open for Friday Happy Hour with drinks by Joey from Wight Tea. Follow Whitehall Market and Heritage Kitchen to stay in the loop as the bar prepares to open with wider hours this summer.ps. Firefly Cheese has the best mortadella. And talk with Jesse there about wines, he's amazing.

RECIPES FOR WHAT'S AT THE MARKET RIGHT NOW

My weekly CSA ⏤One Straw Farm, the best! ⏤ started last week. The first CSA day is like Christmas morning for me. Better than Christmas morning, really. This week, I got some beautiful cucumbers, which are one of my most favorite snacking vegetables. I had seen a recipe on Instagram (I screenshot things and text them to myself because I am very forgetful) from Salt & Lavender. I think I saw it two months ago...and finally made it today: Creamy Cucumber Salad.
This salad is so good. Nice and light. But only make as much as you want to eat the same day. It tends to get a little watery after a while in the fridge. Also, this tuna salad recipe from Culinary Hill is mighty good, too. I highly recommend using the freshest celery you can find. I picked up some local celery from Richfield Farm (Sundays at the JFX Market and Johnny's Roland Park Market) and it makes a huge difference. If you have never had local in-season celery, please get some ⏤ it's a cooking game changer. And be sure to save the leaves to use in vegetable stock, add a little to salad greens, it can also be a nice substitute for parsley.
