Are you enjoying soccer? Do you want more soccer? Well, have we got a deal for you!

Included with your fall registration are Sunday Soccer for all ages. This weekly event is meant to give players an extra chance to develop their skills and love for the game during the fall season. Whether your player is looking to learn new skills, get a little extra practice, get some targeted goalkeeper training, or just wants to play soccer with friends who didn’t end up on their fall team this year, we hope to see you out on the field on Sundays! Sunday Soccer gives two different ways for your player(s) to participate: (i) Skills & Scrimmage and (ii) Goalkeeper Academy. Players may participate in either or both of these.

This for all ages: arrive whenever you’d like and play for as long as you’d like! Check-in upon arrival so that we know who is there and leave a phone number in case we need to call you.

The Goalkeeper Academy will be run by professional coaches from Launch Sports. Small groups will be formed with players receiving targeted goalkeeping instruction for 30-60 mins, after which we hope players will join in the skills & scrimmages sessions.

Throughout the entire 3:30-5:00 period, players can participate in small-sided soccer games. Players can arrive/depart whenever they would like. Launch staff and parent volunteers will do their best to create a rotating series of small-sided games with players of similar skill levels throughout the period. The beginning of the session will include a skills-oriented warmup period to get players ready for the scrimmages.

Also included is NEXT for 10U, 12U, and 14U players

It starts in the fall with enthusiastic kids who want a challenge getting together on Sundays to play a scrimmage.

As the fall season progresses, coaches will arrange scrimmages with teams from around Southern California. In December, there are two tournaments, including the prestigious Sportsmanship Cup in Beverly Hills. In the Spring, the NEXT group will practice up to twice a week and travel to compete in tournaments in exotic places like Glendale, Diamond Bar, Culver City, Huntington Beach, and more.

NEXT is open to all players who love soccer, and are seeking advanced play with friendly teammates. Coaches will form competitive rosters for each tournament from players participating in NEXT practices, not all players will be able to participate in every tournament.

Following the fall soccer league, each region in the West San Gabriel Valley may form All-Stars teams, to play a league schedule in January and February each year, with the eventual winners advancing to the Section Tournament in March. Players must register online to be considered for All-Stars and/or Thanksgiving Tournament teams. There will be two tryouts. Players must have played in half of the core season games, including playoffs (the Rose City Cup), in accordance with Area 1-C rules. The sole exceptions are if a player is unable to play due to illness or injury or a change of residence from one Region to another.

Quiz!

1.While the ball is in play, a goalkeeper catches the ball inside their penalty area and then releases it from their hands. As soon as the ball is on the ground, an attacker, who remained on the field of play behind the goalkeeper's back, runs towards the ball. The goalkeeper then notices the attacker, picks the ball up with their hands inside the penalty area, and prevents the opponent from kicking the ball. What is the correct decision if the attacker did not commit a foul while approaching the goalkeeper?

2. A defender pulls the shirt of an attacker inside the penalty area when the ball is in play. It was not an obvious goal-scoring opportunity but it stopped a promising attack (SPA) because the attacker lost possession of the ball. What is the correct decision? 

3. An attacker and several defenders enter the penalty area before a penalty kick is taken. The goalkeeper saves the kick and the ball rebounds to the attacker who encroached and who then scores a goal. What is the correct decision if the encroachment by the defenders did not have impact?

The only restriction is that team names not reference weapons. Ninjas, sharks, dragons, snakes, and mythical monsters are all fine.

Goalkeeper Appreciation Week

Goalkeeping is a peculiar specialization in sport, requiring athleticism, coordination, and courage. Bring your keeper to Goalkeeper Academy this week at Sunday Soccer Skills Clinics, 3:30 on Sunday at McKinley.

Parents

• The schedule is a bit of a mess, which you probably noticed. Some field permits were revoked and assigned to other groups, so the whole season schedule is being reworked as fast as possible. 
• Picture Day assignments will be posted at ayso13.org/pictures
• If you have the last game on your field, please put the goals away neatly. The storage bin at Victory Park is starting to look like a teenager's closet.
• At this point in the season, some spectators start to get really excited! This is your reminder that we're doing this so all the kids can have fun. Your child knows very well that she wants to shoot the ball into the net -- and she probably had a good reason not to. Maybe it's spinning funny, or her momentum is carrying her in a different direction. So focus on cheering encouragement, and let the coach direct the game.
• The tent at Victory Park is an important touch point for lots of lost Grandparents and parents. Please sign up to staff the tent at Victory Park. You can help people find their field or find their car keys. This is an easy way to contribute.
• The field owners request that we leave no trace on our fields - remember to pick up any trash you see, and avoid damaging the fields by dragging chairs, dragging goals, or digging umbrella stands into the ground. Also, spectators at Blair must be behind the track.

• Please assess players by filling in the Ratings tab of your team spreadsheet, so they can be considered for an All-Stars team. Even with younger players, it's good practice to take inventory of where you are. You'll repeat the assessment again in November.

Quiz answers

1. The goalkeeper cannot handle the ball after releasing it and before it has touched another player, so the referee stops play and awards an indirect free kick to the attacking team. There is no yellow card for the goalkeeper.

2. The referee awards a penalty kick. The defender is cautioned (yellow card) for SPA because their offence was not an attempt to play the ball or a challenge for the ball.

3. Although player(s) of both teams entered the penalty area early, the penalty kick is not retaken because only the encroachment by the attacker had impact (playing the ball and scoring a goal). Consequently, the referee awards an indirect free kick for the defending team where the attacker entered the penalty area (no disciplinary sanction).
