Western States Champions

Region13's B12 All-Star team won the Western States championship in March. It's been a while since that happened. Squeee!

The AYSO Core program is a soccer league that runs from from Labor Day until Thanksgiving. Players in the 10U, 12U, 14U divisions will be able to try out for an All-Stars team, which offers three levels of competition in the winter. The top level of All-Stars competes for the West San Gabriel Valley championship. Win that, and it's the Section playoffs (most of LA County plus Riverside County). Win that, and it's the Western States Championships (Washington, Oregon, California).

Volunteers

Referees: Ken Aston Referee Camp is June 21-23 2024 at Chapman University in Orange, CA. AYSO will pay for you to attend and level up your referee certification. Ken Aston, MBE, was an English referee, inventor of the red and yellow card system, and longtime Chief Instructor for AYSO.

Coaches: Sign up for the US Soccer Foundation's seminar on developing team culture on May 8 at 7pm. Why? The registration form asks parents about what they want from a team. "Winning" is one of the small slices. This year, a new option was added, "Positive and supportive team culture," which Region 13 members identify as a priority.

Parents value a positive and supportive team culture.

Fall soccer is coming soon

It's time to apply to volunteer and register for soccer in the fall! The younger divisions, 4U, 5U, 6U, 7U, and 8U, will once again be aligned with the California school grades. Older divisions will go by birth year, consistent with FIFA convention. Older 8U players may choose to join 10U, with a larger field, goalkeepers, offside, and referees with flags. See the age chart at ayso13.org/age for an explanation.

The preschool program (4U and 5U ages) are once a week on Saturday mornings for 8 weeks. See ayso13.org/preschool.

Parents often ask, "can our friends play together on a team?" The answer is, "maybe." For 6U, 7U, and 8U, the division coordinators usually try to group players from the same school together. This works best if all the families involved are volunteering, because at these ages, a team ideally has 8 players, plus 2 parent coaches, 2 referees, and a team manger to handle logistics. That's a ratio of greater than 1 volunteer per 2 kids. Since there are usually more kids wanting to play than parents wanting to volunteer, these rosters can grow to 10. But then the pitch feels crowded. It's better to have fewer kids so everyone gets more touches on the ball.

What could go wrong? Imagine there are 10 kids from San Rafael on a team, and then one more wants to play, and she has to be on a different team. It would be safer to allocate the pool of players among two teams, so they all get to play with some friends from school, and also meet some kids from other schools. It's also important to spread out the most skilled players, because a 22-0 game is only fun for the first few minutes.

Team assignments also depends on who volunteers. The more parents who coach and referee from a particular school or friend group, the more flexibility the division coordinators have in allocating players to teams.

For 4U and 5U, everyone plays together at the same place at the same time. There are usually 12 kids in a group, so there's plenty of flexibility for friends to be together.

For the 10U, 12U, and 14U divisions, teams are formed by a blind draw, which coaches will be invited to witness. Siblings are always placed together, and returning All-Star players are spread out. Player assessments from the preceding season are used to give each team a similar level and range of abilities. Of course, kids grow and change in their level of interest, and there is an element of random chance in the allocation.

The 16U and 19U divisions start training in mid-July, and games start in August, so that they're finished before the CIF season starts.

To give kids more authority and agency over the game, Region 13 has offered Sunday afternoon pickup games for the last few years. This way, kids can form their own teams with friends of all ages, and play with whomever they want, in addition to the regular league games.

Ready to give it a try? Check out ayso13.org/volunteer to learn about what's involved, and then you'll be invited to start your background check when you register.

As long as you understand children, AYSO will teach you everything you need to know to get started, and provide all the equipment. AYSO's system has evolved over 60 years, and continues to lead the nation in best practices for sports coaching. The coach and referee classes are in July and August, just before the league starts in September.
