I've been really, really, really looking forward to fall. Cooler temps, fire pits, sweaters, football, weekend getaways. Fall is my favorite season — so, bring it on! With the change in seasons comes the opportunity for brewery and winery visits, relaxing dinners and other outdoor fun. I am still not feeling comfortable indoors or in crowds, so here are a few ideas for ways to hang safely with your people and enjoy some local food and drinks.
Grab blankets, chairs and your friends and stop by Di Pasquale's for the fixings for a picnic (sandwiches, snacks, cheeses, wine, beer...) and enjoy it across the street at Canton Waterfront Park. Order wine and sake from Angels Ate Lemons in Old Goucher and have a backyard party with your pod. I always let them choose (you can add preferences) and that's a great way to find new favorites.
Meet a friend or enjoy a solo dinner outside at Clavel, Dylan's, Petit Louis, La Cuchara. (Those are some of my uptown favorites.)Find an airbnb at the beach and invite your bestie. The beach in the off-season is the best!
Make a plan to meet up with friends out at a brewery or winery in the country — Inverness Brewing, Manor Hill, Monument City at Spring Meadow, Old Westminster Winery, Black Ankle Vineyards are just a few — and don't forget your designated driver!

A QUIET GETAWAY IN FELL'S POINT
|
|
I try to get out of my routine (and my home) every few months with a weekend getaway. I have written about trips to Philly, Virginia, Western Maryland and more for my blog. If you know me or have followed me for a bit, you will know that I also enjoy staycations near home in Baltimore. Most recently, I booked a night at The Inn at Henderson's Wharf in Fell's Point, one of the City's more under-the-radar hotels. So, what will you find and why should you stay here? First, it's at the far end of Fell Street, just far enough to be very quiet, but close enough for a short walk along the promenade on the water to dinner or to grab coffee. The rooms are decorated in a sort of Hemingway style with classic dark wood shutters and furniture and it's small, not a lot of rooms and they are all on the first floor. The only "noise" I heard was the occasional morning runner or residents walking by with their dogs. SO MANY DOGS. I met golden retrievers and pugs, Aussies and pit bulls, dachshunds and more. The front desk folks were very friendly and helpful, too. Parking is $20 in a gated lot right next to the hotel. Perhaps the best part is that it's part of a small locally-owned hotel group — they also run the Pier V and the Admiral Fell Inn. I have to add that I loved the low-key vibe and that it's not a "scene."
I usually like to try and stay two nights but it wasn't in the budget this time. I checked in, took a snooze, walked to Nanami for my favorite sushi for dinner and then, hit Pitango for a quick breakfast in the morning. (More dogs there, which I loved.)
Highly recommend The Inn at Henderson's Wharf if you want a nice, quiet little escape.

OUTDOOR DINING (sharing this again in case you missed it . . .)

I am thinking good thoughts for everyone in New Orleans today. I can't believe another hurricane is hitting the Big Easy on the 16th anniversary of Katrina. I love that city so much — the people, the food, culture, history, architecture, gardens and everything else that makes it like absolutely no other place. Sending love to my friends there.
